About Us

At first glance, Butchertown Grocery may seem like a conundrum. On the outside, a decidedly simple, 19th-century brick building. On the inside, a sleek restaurant with cozy banquettes, marble tables, mosaic tile on the floor and weathered exposed wood on the ceiling.

You could say the contrast is a lot like our neighborhood: a little raw, a little refined, and with plenty of heart.

Making honest, simple food is what gets us out of bed every morning. We use the best ingredients because we care about where our food comes from. Every dish is inspired by the heritage of hard work and craftsmanship on which our community was built.

What’s with the name?

In the early-to-mid 1900s, our building was home to a family-owned grocery called Gunkel’s. More than just a corner market, Gunkel’s was a gathering place where locals came to buy produce and meats, and chew the fat with the owner, Hattie Gunkel.

We tip our hat to the Gunkels – and to the tradition of bringing people together through great food.

About Menu Reservations Events Contact
Executive Chef/Owner
Bobby Benjamin

Bobby’s culinary philosophy is simple, like his food: respect ingredients, cook with integrity and be honest on the plate. While it’s hard to define the range in Bobby’s menu at Butchertown Grocery, the common thread is that every dish is personal and reflects a point in his life where good food made a lasting impact.

Bobby earned his stripes in top kitchens across the country, including renowned regional establishments like The Oakroom, La Coop and Union Commons in Nashville. At Butchertown Grocery, he is realizing his dream of creating a restaurant with approachable food, an inviting atmosphere and a third space for locals to enjoy. In short, a restaurant for the people.

Chef De Cuisine
Randy Pasch

Randy credits his grandparents with instilling in him a passion for food and cooking. He attended Sullivan University’s Culinary Institute on scholarship and after graduation, earned positions at some of Louisville’s most highly regarded restaurants, including Proof on Main in the acclaimed 21c Museum Hotel. He also spent three years in Chicago, staging at prestigious restaurants such as Tru, Alinea and Acadia. Randy shares Bobby’s appreciation for technique and respecting ingredients through honest cooking.

Pastry Chef
Barbara Turner

When guests are greeted by the aroma of fresh-baked bread or decadent chocolate chip cookies, they can thank Barbara. Growing up in a military family, she was exposed to a variety of cuisines and cultures from an early age. But it was her mother who first sparked her passion for pastry – a passion that would lead her to earn a degree in baking and pastry arts from Sullivan University. Barbara has completed master classes from prestigious Swiss chocolatier, Felchlin, and served as an instructor in Sullivan’s pastry program for the past 10 years.

Beverage Director
Nic Christiansen

Nic has earned a reputation for creativity and style, with years of experience crafting classic and one-of-a-kind drinks at cocktail-forward restaurants including Maker’s Mark Bourbon House and Bourbon Raw in Louisville. She is a student of mixology with an extensive knowledge of bourbon and spirits, and takes pride in delivering a fun and personal experience to every guest. Nic is a certified specialist of Patrón, a graduate of the Bourbon Aroma Academy and currently serves as treasurer of the United States Bartenders’ Guild.
